A representative of the Management Unit of Dao Co Tourist Attraction Site, Chi Lang Nam commune (Thanh Mien), said a herd of about 30 Asian openbill storks had appeared in the area.
This is a rare and precious species in the Vietnam Red Book.
At the same time last year, there were only five Asian openbill storks at Dao Co.
After Dao Co had been expanded with more bamboo trees planted, the environment improved and more storks and night herons came to live there.
At present, the site is home to about 20,000 storks and night herons, up 3,000 – 4,000 birds over the same period last year.
The Management Unit has planted more trees and built nests and a number of bamboo frames for storks and night herons to lay eggs during the breeding season.
